Leveraging Community Leadership in Aligning Systems for Health

Our Mission

How We Accomplish Our Mission

Strengthening our communities and empowering residents through community engagement programs, educational services, economic development, healthy eating, and active living by utilizing self-help approaches and collaboration.
Through active civic engagement, the NHCDG promotes and supports the community by taking action, organizing, and planning together to solve community problems. We help to sustain and build healthy neighborhoods by building social capital, community engagement, organizing, assisting neighbors in getting to know each other (neighborhood associations), and finding solutions that will lessen the impact of social justice disparities. We work with small community groups, collaborate with civic groups, and work with local, state, and federal governments to provide economic development projects, such as affordable housing.

Our History

New Hope Community Development Group was incorporated on February 18, 2004 and was recognized as an exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue, February 2007. Through the Theology teaching of the late Dr. Walter M. Richmond, Sr., Founding Pastor of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, the organization  incorporated the non-profit and community foundation principles of Dr. Richmond, Sr. Those principles included community outreach and inclusive and equitable approaches that will be of benefit to the community. These fundamental teachings were applied by Reverend Walter M. Richmond, Jr., while working as the Economic Justice Officer of the NAACP throughout the state. Reverend Richmond, Jr. also used an inclusive and equitable approach to aiding communities to identify predatory lending practices. Discussion with some New Hope Missionary Baptist Church members who were of the same mind, forming the New Hope Community Development Group was decided. Founding Organizing Officers of the organization were: the late Marilyn Baird, Executive Director, Patricia R. Macfoy, Co-Director, Walter M. Richmond, Jr., Board Chair, Shirley M. Vanstory, Secretary, Alice Morehead, Treasurer.
